seems to put as much into football as he has family and he thinks very highly of the game. “No Hi is higher and no low is lower than what the game is, I’m telling” (Pg 244).

Even though Gaines puts so much work into the game the town still ridicules him constantly after a hard loss. Gaines goes through so much with the town that he could quit at any time but his perseverance wouldn’t allow it. “ His pursuit to win a state championship became a ruthless obsession, say those who worked for him, for he knew that anything less would not be enough it wasn’t uncommon for players to see him throwing up before a game because not only did he want to win he had to win.” (Pg 243). He persevered through all the crap that the town put him through when the team would lose. He persevered through the boys stupid decisions. He preserved through so many things that a normal high school coach wouldn’t have to go through and yet he put his entire career on the line every time he stepped foot on the football field.

Everything that Gary Gaines has been put through on the field only strengthens his position in the town. Some days he’s highly respected, and on other days there’s petitions out to get him fired. Through everything that happened to the coach in this book goes to show that the love of something can make someone do crazy things they don’t like to do or get criticized greatly for even just the little things but all that goes to show that if someone loves something greatly nothing would be in the way of that. Everything would be forgotten and total focus would be on that goal or love for something. Coach proved to himself, the team, and the town that he has what it takes to be the head coach of the Permian high school football team and take them to state.
