Symbolism discussed in Orwell’s Animal Farm
Animal Farm is a novella written by George Orwell. It is full of symbols, which will be explained in this essay. The most important and effective symbols in the novel are Mr. Jones, the windmill and the farmhouse.
To begin with, Mr. Jones is the farmer the animals end up kicking off the farm. Mr. Jones symbolizes Tsar Nicholas II, Russia's last tsar. Well, he was not so great of a leader, and was deposed in a revolution in 1917. He and his whole family were later executed. For being cruel and incompetent, the animals hate Mr. Jones, and the peasants and laborers of Russia in the 1900s believed the same of Nicholas. He lavished money on himself and his court while his people suffered in devastating poverty and hunger.
The windmill, and the way the pigs manipulate its image and purpose, symbolizes the manipulation of the public by the government. The windmill is first presented as something wonderful and helpful then by the end of the book is transformed into something 'for the good of the farm'. The work of the animals is ultimately exploited by Napoleon and the other pigs to bring them personal gain and profit. The animals see none of this profit. This is much like the projects undertaken in Soviet Russia to 'modernize' the country.
The Farmhouse symbolizes the power equation, which governs the relationship between the pigs and the other animals in the farm. From the beginning of the novel to the end, the farmhouse is occupied by humans or pigs who run the farm. After the rebellion, the pigs gradually become the leaders of the farm and relocated themselves in the farmhouse. This shows how higher authority is centered in the farmhouse and how the pigs slowly take control over the farm.
To conclude, this symbolic novel is astonishing with its language and events. In addition to that, one reader can always find new symbolic meanings since the layers of meaning can diverse depending on personal views.
