make money. She starts to hear about automobiles. People were starting to talk about Edison who’d invented electricity. The year after James died was hard. A lot of farmer couldn’t pay their bills for the things that they bought from the store James parents own. James’s dad started getting into bad shape. Sister Clark, a friend from church, offers to help Maude get a job to sew. The next few years Maude worked as a seamstress. She made fancy dresses for ladies. Maude’s first time leaving her small town, she goes to Union City to measure the women. Soon enough Maude was making enough money for her and Lulu. James’s dad never had a recovery from losing James. James’s dad gets sick with the flu. Everyone in town gets sick. After a while of him not recovering well, he dies at the age of fifty. James’s mom wants to be become even closer to Maude, so she asks if her and Lulu would like to move in with them.
Chapter ten: Maude starts to get the attention a few men in town but she’s not interested. Years past, It was 1915. Maude was twenty four and Lulu was ten. John Stuart, a friend of Maude brings a girl named Bessie into town and introduces her to Maude and they became best friends. One Sunday Bessie and John brings George, Bessie’s older brother, with them to church. George and Maude start to find interest in each other. Maude soon starts to lose interest in George. Lulu doesn’t like George. James’s mom says that Maude has to marry George. She went out in a buggy with him. James’s mom believes that if she doesn’t then no one decent in the town will talk to her and she’ll be put out of the church. George didn’t ask Maude to marry him, but James’s mom and Bessie are going to try get George to go back to Maude the next morning and propose to her.
Chapter eleven: A few years later George and Maude are talking about how Bessie got George to marry Maude.
Chapter twelve: George goes to Maude and asks her to become his wife. Maude and Lulu doesn’t want to leave the town, but they have to because George has a job, house, livestock, and his mother to take care of back in Missouri. Lulu and Maude have a meal with the family before they make their way to Missouri with George.
Chapter thirteen: Late afternoon they stopped on the banks of the Mississippi to spend the night across the river from Caruthersville, Missouri. The next morning they got on a ferry. They rode all morning and afternoon, but stopped once to eat. Maude and Lulu fell asleep . Soon they stopped at a large two story house. Right when they entered the house, they were greeted by George’s mother. Lulu was still asleep, so George carried Lulu upstairs to Bessie’s old bedroom. George’s mom isn’t too fond of Maude. Once Maude gets into George’s bedroom, she goes to the window and looks around at the different buildings around the house. After George gets back she decides to go to the outhouse. When she comes back, she goes back upstairs and gets ready for bed, wondering what type of man she married. She’s only known him for five days.
