[pic 11]The tourism in Dubai is an important part of the Dubai government’s strategy to maintain the flow of the foreign cash to the emirate. Dubai’s lure for tourists is based mainly on shopping, but also on its possession of ancient and modern attractions. Dubai is a very popular place to visit because of how different it is from other places. In 2014 Dubai had about 13.2 million visitors, majority of which came from neighboring Arab countries as seen in figure 6 to the left. This is a huge source of income for Dubai because of all of the money that the tourism industry brings in. [pic 12]
Dubai has been nicknamed “the shopping capital of the Middle East.” This large city draws large numbers of shoppers from all around the globe because of its location and great shopping malls. Modern shopping malls and boutiques can be found all over the city of Dubai. “Cars, clothing, jewellery, electronics, furnishing, sporting equipment and any other goods will all be likely to be under the same roof” (Wiki). Dubai has a mall that is so large and brings in so many people, and it even has a skiing slope inside the mall right in Dubai.
Dubai also brings in sports tourism by hosting a large number of international championships from around the world:
- Dubai World Cup – the richest horse race in the world
- Dubai Classic - the golf championship
- Barclays Dubai Tennis for both men and women
- UIM World Powerboat racing
- Rugby Sevens
- Dubai International Rally
- Dubai Snooker Classic
- The UAE Desert Challenge
- The Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon
This brings in a large amount of profits for Dubai and they get a lot of tourism from this.
[pic 13] Dubai is the 4th most visited city in the entire world just after London, Paris, and Bangkok. However Dubai actually has the highest visitor per resident ratio from 4.9 visitors per resident in 2009 to 5.7 in 2015 (Go-Gulf). The actual estimated number of visitors in 2020 is about 20 million. The number of room’s available for tourists to stay is about 93,030 with an occupancy level of about 86.5%. The average room rate for the rooms is about 1070 AED ($291 USD) per day. And the average person that stays over night in Dubai spends about $817 USD per person. This is a huge source of income for Dubai and they really benefit from having all of these tourists visit. The average length of stay for has increased from 3.78 days to 3.84 days in 2014, which is just increasing the income for Dubai.
Dubai has set a goal of 20 million visitors by 2020. Dubai wants to keep their tourism industry growing to keep the profits growing. With this the average room rate is expected to grow with the rise in tourism as well. With all of the very popular tourist attractions that Dubai has to offer it will not be that difficult of a goal for them to meet. Dubai has a large number of great tourist attractions that will bring people from far away to visit. One of the really awesome things that Dubai has is the Dubai Mall. The Dubai Mall is a huge tourist attraction with an aquarium, ice skating rink, gaming zone and a cinema complex. The Dubai mall is the largest mall in the world by total area of over 13 million square feet. The mall also has a 250-room hotel right inside of the mall. One of the other malls that Dubai has is the Mall of the Emirates. This is another very famous mall and another huge tourist attraction. This mall has a ski slope right inside of the mall. That’s right an indoor ski slope. The indoor ski slope is complete with chair lifts and a penguin enclosure all at the temperature of about -4 Celsius.
Dubai is also home to the Burj Khalifa, the worlds tallest building standing at 829.8 meters. For the visitors there is an observation deck on the 124th floor and is a must do for any tourist in the city. There is a high-speed elevator that whizzes you up to the observation deck with 360 degree views across the skyscrapers to the desert on the one side and the ocean on the other (planetware). The tourism industry in Dubai is very strong and it is still growing. This is a huge source of income for Dubai and they want to keep it growing. Dubai has so much to offer tourists so it is such a popular choice of travel.
