Michele Terry the Aspiring Banking Executive

Michele Terry, who is forty five years old, works at Federal Bank, which is a medium sized financial institution as the manager for marketing services. Michele is upset because some of the staff she hired got promoted ahead of her and Michele desire of becoming the vice president at Federal Bank is falling apart. Through Michele’s most recent evaluation from her supervisor who is younger than she is and the assistant vice president, she got the filling that her fear of not becoming the vice president and retiring at her current level may become a reality and unfortunately the Federal Bank in which she works does not have plans for her to advance to that position.

The lack of a higher academic degree is one of the main challenges that Michele faces on her quest to attain the executive vice president position since the financial industry was hiring individual with MBA’s while she only has a Bachelors degree, this plus the fact that she also lacked the “varied experiences in the financial services industry” (Greehaus, Callanan & Godshalk, 2010). To make matters worst, the financial industry felt that she did not have the image to be an executive officer, regardless of her competency. So she realized that although there may be a very small chance for her advancement, it would a very slim to none chance for her to get that position.

Michele gave up on her of dream of becoming an executive vice president, and in the mean time she reevaluated the real reasons why she always wanted that position. Michele then took steps to broaden the scope of her current position”(Greenhaus, Callanan & Godshalk, 2010). Accepting the she may never become the vice president of the bank; she developed new career goals by reevaluating and developing herself by enrolling in several training seminars on community reinvestment, chaired a task force on new market development project and serve as a mentor to upcoming younger managers. Her new approach was to make an effort to influence the bank’s approach to community reinvestment. Due to this, Michele began to experience a more work-life balance and be more relaxed.

Therefore she became more influential in her husband’s career, helping him to switch to a more satisfying career field and while he was very successful, she was able to enjoy along side with him, she then score an outstanding performance evaluation. Instead of being disappointed and frustrated for not being able to fulfill her long term goal, Michele began to be of great influence at the bank. Although she does work as much as she used to, her marketing group has become more innovative at several projects and people that she leads are making real progress, she is able to enjoy her relationships with the younger managers at the bank and all these have brought her respect among the bank. At the same time Michele developed new career goal at accepting that she may never become the vice president of the bank.

Career Goals

During the time that Michele has worked at the Federal bank, she had 15 interviews with other financial institutions with the expectancy of advancing her career and some day becoming a vice president. She was competent enough in for the position which shows that she had conceptual goals but lack some in the operational goal due to that she did not have sufficiently varied experiences in the financial industry while pursuing a position as a vice president. However ones she decided to be successful in the position that she was in, not only she has the operational goals but she continue on developing them by enrolling in training seminars
