6. Should GM fight the Dateline issue or “let a sleeping dog lie” (the story was aired
nearly 3 months before the jury verdict)? Why or why not?
They should fight the Dateline issue.
Although the media has already chosen their side to against GM, this issue is about a company's product safety and reputation. The level of attention that punlic pays is very high, so it means that if GM does not fight the Dateline, their public image will become worse and the media will continue reporting the following happenings which can make the audience tend to trust them. The defence for GM itself is important and necessary for keep their customers' trust and loyalty.
7. If GM decides to pursue the Dateline story, should it do so with NBC directly, in the
courts, or in the court or public opinion, etc.? How should it implement its decision?
After the nationally television broadcast that reached approximately 11 million viewers, GM officials examined the NBC test segment and analyzed the tapes. They found out that the tests from those tapes were all have problems and the fire was confined to the grass, short lived, and not life endangering, so the report from NBC was unfair.
GM handled so much information that shows they were in the correct side, so I thought that GM should fight NBC directly to prove that NBC was wrong.
8. In the position of Mr. Gardiner at NBC, what would you have done upon receiving
GM’s letter and findings?
If I am in the position of Mr. Gardiner atNBC, I will take following steps:
1. Do our own investigation to check the whether the test is right or wrong.
(The truth is that the information shows in the test is unfair)
2. Get the report that shows the test is not scientfic.
3. Check with the legal department to get the advice for following actions.
4. Apologize for the unfair test to the public.
9. Suppose NHTSA responds to the CAS petition for a recall. What strategy should GM
adopt – should it cooperate or should it challenge the recall in the courts? Why?
I think it should cooperate.
The recall has already happened, so the cost of recall has added in the company's statement. If you GM still wants to challenge the recall, it would make extra liker the examination of the test and the spending of lawsuits. It can make the total spending become much larger than just cooperate.
