The role society plays in the garbage dumped into the marine Garbage Patch are that people believe that plastic is a one use resource, you buy a plastic bottle, drink the content, then throw it away, regardless of where it is actually going. There are no laws preventing people from doing this, and no laws limiting how much plastic can be used and thrown away, so the issue becomes less significant to people. This results in becoming a plastic dependent society, with an increasing demand for it. People should be made aware of the consequences throwing away plastic has on the environment, and laws should be enhanced limiting the amount of plastic available for each person. Governments should also enforce recycling of plastics, in order to stop it from being thrown into the ocean. Due to the lack of awareness, there are no direct consequences for society in throwing away their plastic, so people may not feel the need to stop. In order to make people aware, companies and organisations should inspire people to reduce the amount of plastic they use on a daily basis. Laws could be put into place, and businesses could begin looking for alternative resources that do the same as plastic. To sum up, action needs to be taken in order to create a society aware of the negative impacts their actions may have on the environment they live in.

In conclusion the only way to start making a change is to make people more aware of the impacts their actions have on the environment. There is a lack of responses to this global pollution incident, and someone has to take initiative and start enhancing rules on plastic in the ocean. Not only does it pollute the ocean, but it destroys ecosystems and affects the food chain. As long as the demand for plastic can be controlled, and people only take what they need, the causes for the incident will reduce, and people can begin finding ways to clear up the mess already made.
