"Sociopathy" is a type of ASPD, meaning antisocial personality disorder, and is characterized by a lack of the capacity to empathize with other people - not by a lack of feelings as is generally understood. A sociopath is antisocial, manipulative, deceitful, rule-breaking, and superficially charming so they can have their way. But what makes them, them?

Some think that people become sociopaths because they suffered from an appalling childhood; others believe it is because the individual is “crazy.” But who is correct? Factors such as slower maturing of the brain or even early brain damage greatly influence the development of an ASPD. Scientists have no clear answer; nonetheless, they are certain that the genetics must exist, but something has to trigger them. Early life experiences or trauma, such as extreme poverty, abuse, rejection, and other adverse conditions can, if the biological nature allows, be part of the causes of sociopathy.

Sociopaths are very good at manipulation and deception. Even so, there are some telltale signs of ASPD’s. Sociopaths lack the ability to feel empathy toward others, have no respect for social norms, and see any social situation as a contest or a test. They seldom seek help, so some sociopaths tend to go years without being spotted.

Many people use the terms psychopath and sociopath interchangeably, however they are two contrasting things. Psychopaths tend to be paranoid and suspicious and the implications of this paranoia tend to be severe. While sociopaths can never plan ahead due to their impulsive urges, these people place a lot of emphasis on planning, especially when planning to commit a crime, they tend to plan for years. However when it comes to sociopaths, they are incapable of maintaining relationships, jobs and they are highly disorganized and erratic.

Sociopaths are special beings, they truly are misunderstood and outcast by society. People should educate themselves in order to know what they are dealing with. The world is a complex place after all, and like it or not, survival of the fittest is relevant in the modern world. Now that you know what makes a sociopath themselves, and how to recognize one, you have a great advantage over the rest who do not even know what a sociopath is.
