Moving on, after Descartes discovered the truth about his existence, that the only certain thing about him is that he is a thinking thing and by thinking he exists, cogito ergo sum, he now continued and tried to reinstate his findings on what is the indubitable. So he came up with the example of the wax. Its color, physical state & smell changes according to the environment’s temperature and we know that change correlates to an indistinct idea. Because of this concludes that we know the melted wax is still the same solid and scented wax due to the faculty of judgement of the mind. This proposition just proves that the mind can be separate from the body and that it is the only thing to be trusted. Finally Descartes’ Cartesian Project was a success however it is human nature to resort back into our old practices, to our old beliefs. Like for example we might be considering and applying the meditations for a few weeks but come back to our old ways of believing things via our senses. Or perhaps what our conclusion of the film might be. Do we consider the children to be real even if the ending left us hanging and in doubt? This now leaves us to the faculty of judgment. We are now required to make a decision and that is to either make a habit of the meditations or to go back into believing our old philosophies afterall inception just proved that we can arrive at a basic idea without disregarding our thoughts. But if you were to ask me I would like to believe that the children aren’t just projections even if there is a chance that Cobb might still be dreaming and must have tasted his own medicine of inception because in the end what we choose to be real will be the basic idea that defines our reality.
