One day we noticed smoke coming from our field. We assumed it was from the deep drought, but little did we know someone set our field on fire and they were coming closer to our house. The rebels were taking over and were destroying everything they could. Then one night, a blast came outside our front door knocking out part of our wall. They reached us. We were caught. I could tell my parents were scrambling upstairs. I didn’t know what to do, so I hid in a pile of hay in the corner of my room. The last thing I heard was gunshots and my little brother screaming “momma” and “papa”. Then I heard nothing at all. I was mortified. I knew my family was dead. All of them lifeless and hopeless. It was exceedingly difficult to process. I couldn’t believe it. I was alone. I was alone. I was alone. There was no time to grieve though. I had to get out. I had to leave. When I didn’t hear anything upstairs, I went up to the kitchen. Blood everywhere. I tried not to look. I put some food in my backpack and ran. I didn’t stop running. I just ran. I ran through the night and all the day after. I ran up to the top of some hills. I didn’t know where I was. It was already night again. I was lost, hungry and sad. I felt like I was going to die. I collapsed to the ground. I cried like I never have before. Just reminiscing about my family and wondering why. Why? Why did this have to start in the first place? Why did they die and not me? I sobbed myself to sleep.
I could tell it was morning now. I felt the rising sun on my eyes. The sun woke me up. I wiped my eyes and slowly stood up. Oddly enough, I felt a presence in the sun’s beam. It was as if it was trying to communicate something to me. The sun ray shined over the hill. I walked a few meters up and looked over. A truly sanguine and breath-taking sight. The sun was beaming on a town below. I immediately understood. This was my destiny. It was a miracle. I instantly felt better. There was hope for me after all. Things would eventually get better and start to go back to normal. It was a chance of new life.
