Furthermore, the need to satisfy curiosity is a major role in minimum wage advertisements, because it makes America aware if who and how the minimum wage helps people. Jib Fowles explains. “It may seem odd to list a need for information among basic motives…human beings are curios by nature, interested in the world around them, and intrigues by tidbits of knowledge and new developments”(76). The need to satisfy curiosity is to be given information that people were not aware of. This appeal shows its audience statistics. A minimum wage increase advertisement that appeals the need to satisfy curiosity would be states that increased minimum wage. The employment growth advertisement displays a map of the United States that highlight 13 states out of 50. Those 13 states are those that raised the minimum wage and have had their employment rate rise. The advertisement than states, “The 13 states that increased their minimum wages on Jan. 1 had stronger employment growth than the 37 states that didn’t.” This advertisement is implying that raising the minimum wage will help the United States, with stronger employment growth because the 13 states that have raised their minimum wage have had their employment rate grow. That advertisement uses the need to satisfy curiosity, because it is showing its audience information that makes them aware of the situation it has its viewers curious and has them want to look into raising the minimum wage.
The need for curiosity helps show the audience the pros and cons of raising the minimum wage in these graph advertisements. The hourly cut advertisement for the opposing side of raising the minimum wage is a chart that displays the percentages and numbers of how much the society’s how will get cut. It states, “Minimum gain- a minimum wage hike $10.10/hr plus Obama care’s employer fines could hike compensation for full-time workers up to 70% and part timers by 39%, increasing pressure on employers to cut hours.” This stance is meaning that hours will be cut because an employer does not want to pay up to 70% for Obama care for full time workers and would rather pay only 39% for Obama care for part time workers. The logical fallacy for this opposing advertisement would be post hoc fallacy because it is saying if we raise the minimum wage the than the hours will be cut because the insurance will cost a lot of money. This is not a persuasive advertisement, because insurance costs a lot wherever you go and if they do pay 70% more for Obama care if the employers are full time they will still be helping society get jobs which will have society be able to go to those companies and purchase things which will have the sales rise. Companies will actually be gaining profit and not so much losing its profit.
How can advertisements help be able to persuade Nevada to increase their minimum wage? Advertisements help bring out some of the major issues America faces today. One of those big issues that was explained, was raising the minimum wage. The three appeals that help advertise raising the minimum wage are, need for affiliation, need to agree, and need to satisfy curiosity. Those advertisements help show the United States how raising the minimum wage reduces poverty, improves living standards, and increases employment rates. All political issues have an opposing side as well. Advertisers love to try to compete with the opposing side. The three appeals I found that help persuade society to not raise the minimum wage is the need for guidance, safety, and satisfy curiosity. For the reasons of increasing poverty, kill jobs, and increase government dependency. Those arguments are not so persuasive. If Nevada is able to raise the minimum wage, one will have less people living in poverty and more people having stable income careers. That will slowly help build up the United States into a better country.
