Kidder has found an example of a person who has been so charitable it would seem his entire life is devoted to the people he heals. Another figure in society who has had a profound effect on healthcare is Bill Gates. He is one of the richest men in the world founder of Microsoft. You would not think that his monopolistic corporation Microsoft would help anyone in third world countries at all. That in fact is entirely not true, “He has reportedly said he will give away 95% of his entire wealth” (Guardian). This kind of donation can save nations of people’s lives and continue even after Gates’ death. With that kind of money they can form entire corporations that only have the goal to help, for instance the Golden Brown project that Gates created will reportedly immunize 90 percent of children against common lethal diseases by 2015. In 2002 alone 1.5 million children died from vaccine preventable diseases. Bill Gates has saved over 670,000 lives already which are over ten times more than American casualties in Vietnam thus illustrating the effect of one person.
The book “Mountains Beyond Mountains” has opened my eyes to people like Farmer. His purpose in life is to help others and is completely selfless; all his money in grants he gets for practicing medicine goes to vaccines for the poor. Kidder is trying to show how one can carry himself for others and still achieve self actualization. The book gives an inside look on health problems that don’t affect the majority of the population. Kidder brings awareness of people who vastly change the world in a positive way. Fighting diseases and thriving for vaccines I take for granted is something that happens every day. Next time I go to the doctor to take my shots I can definitely no longer drag my feet. The book brought insight to my life about developing countries and their struggle for the basic needs.
