Nowadays, following the trend and what is fashionable has become priority for most youths. Whether it is social media, music, or clothing, they all contribute in changing the trend of the year, season or even month. Looking good, on the other hand, is very different too the trending fashion. A white t-shirt can be seen worn ten years ago and ten years later, however, this neither would be seen as trendy or unfashionable.
In my opinion, following fashion is important; This doesn’t just mean wearing what is fashionable, it is knowing about society and the culture of the present. Fashion, music, and fame all twist together pushing the conventional limits further away. In the 70s, famous bands like Fleetwood Mac or ABBA would set a standard to fashion for the decade: floral prints, flared jeans, disco shirts… This is what formed the culture, what made the 70s the 70s.
Coming back to the present, fashion standards come from everywhere, the past and future brought together to the present. The 2018 Met Gala was a peak in fashion where celebrities such as Rihanna, Rita Ora, and Katy Perry wore big statement dresses not only representing themselves as artists but also the designers of their dresses. Fashion trends now come from beyond magazines and runways; Due to our environmental concerns, wearing plastic has become a trend to protect and promote a greener earth. It is seen on the runway of Chanel, Burberry, Topshop, Calvin Klein and Fendi.
But do people wear plastic to look good? Looking good is a different matter, looking good is street style, it’s about the entire piece, the whole outfit. Yes, this is fashion as well but it doesn’t necessarily follow a trend. Everybody’s style is different, and what looks good in my eyes may not look good in yours. No style is the same. So, the phrase ‘Looking good’ means differently to everyone, therefore it isn’t important, and the phrase ‘Looking good’ is subjective.
Fashion plays a major part of our contemporary culture because it is a reflection of what is happening around us, but it should not denote the way we dress. We should have the freedom to create our own personal culture, and it is our choice whether we decide to present it through our appearance or not.
