On the Internet there are also a lot of people, who agree with Joan Smith’s view on this topic. For an example I have picked the editor of the magazine Charlie Hebdo. In an interview from 2012[2] he defends his decision to publish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, and says that his magazine has the right to use the freedom to run whatever cartoons they would like, as shown in this quote “we have the right to use our freedom as we understand it”. I think that the way Joan Smiths’’ views the Charlie Hebdo massacre is in line with the principles of a democratic society. We in the western world have been raised in this believe and direction. I have been raised in a country where I can speak freely about whatever I want. I do not agree with pope Francis, who thinks that there and limits to freedom of speech and that we can only expect a reaction if we insult someone by using this freedom. If we have to fear being punished because we say what we mean, we are not free. We should not let the Muslims get to decide what we can and cannot say. It is okay that they don’t think that you should draw Muhammad, but in our democratic society we have the right to do it and they should not argue with that. I agree with Joan Smith. We should write more, provoke more and we should make it very clear for the whole world that we stick to our principles. We have freedom of speech and we are planning on keeping it.
