Micronesians
The youngest Micronesians are turning their backs on traditional life because modern life is more convenient in today's world. The younger generation in Micronesian has to live without cars, internet, and cell phones. The island is too small and they never experience any modern technology outside of the islands. There are 607 islands in Micronesia. There are no cars there and a boat comes to the island to give people ice. The population drain is causing a major problem to both the culture and the islands. The younger Micronesians are in need of the educations, families, and a better lifestyle.
After the younger generation is done in elementary school, they have to move to a different island to go to high school and college. Pohnpei is the island where the children get a better education. “Leopold says that once the children go to the Western life they don’t want to return” and if they want to go study and work more they have to Guam, Hawaii, or West coast the USA. Also, some children just stay in Pohnpei to live there. Children should be able to get a better education from the more populated places.
The Micronesians are also leaving their atolls for modern technology such as internet and cell phones. These people have to live without refrigeration and other modern essentials. They have to grow and catch their own food. They go fishing to catch fish and they tend to taro crops. Also, coconut fiber is used to thatch wooden huts and for weaving clothes. People have to find their own way to eat their food.
Those who remain living there on the islands are the middle-aged adults and schoolchildren. There is just 210 islander that remain on the land. Also, when the adults have babies then the babies will be living there too. But most of the people live where it has better modern technology. The other islands have better technology because the place is bigger.
The Micronesians are leaving the atolls to find a modern lifestyle that includes technology, work, and learning opportunities. Micronesian do not have a large educational system so many will move to get a better education. Also, people leave for modern conveniences such as cars, phones, and internet. Lastly, there are not many people left living on the atolls which makes it hard to have a sustainable community. In the future, it is possible that some atolls cultures could disappear forever.
