they could do when they sense something bad in another person. They had the guts to stay away from those who would do harm to them. George flashes back and thinks, “I thought of all we had been through together, from boys comparing sneakers on the schoolyard in walking across the stage to become doctors.” (page 28). He like to think back to the old times and how he made his way up the ladder with the help of his friends to become a doctor. George is grateful for meeting them and not meeting the bad friends.
George’s teacher also has helped George through the hard times. The teacher he had the deepest memory of is his third grade teacher. He said, “I had a third- grade teacher who taught me how to dream to think of myself.” (page 109). The teacher taught him many things and one thing was to dream of himself, think about what he would be when he grows up and how to reach that dream. If it weren’t for his teacher, George might not be where he is today. “I hung out with kids who were like me, trying to do the right thing.” (page 11). George knew a few friends who were also trying and struggling to get to their goals. George had people who support him and helped him, but the friends he knew didn’t, some of them would’ve even ended up as junkies. But George had more than enough help. He had his family, friends and teachers who cared for him and his future.
