In the text, we hear Rose leave Nat and finds Roland instead, the question is why that Rose refuses to marry Nat but instead ends up marrying Roland. In the text, we hear that Rose refuses to marry Nat because his name is slight and swattable, then later she finds Roland and ends being together with him instead. She finds herself more comfortable with him because his name reminds her of her own because his name starts with a rolling and curling sensation in the tongue. It could also be because Roland and Rose do remind of each other. Roland is also a word lover just like Rose is. Rose might also admire that Roland is an occasional poetry writer.
The pen symbolizes exclusivity because it is a very fine and expensive pen since it is a Parker 51. But it mostly symbolizes the major key to do what she loves. She has her huge love for words and doesn’t mind spending a lot time with words. The pen is the best thing you can give Rose, she writes words when she writes letters to Nat.
The ending does remind me a bit of the start of the text. Starting off from the beginning we hear that Nat and Rose are standing on a bridge, and Nat told Rose that she wanted to marry her. In the end, Rose and Roland stands on the same bridge as Rose and Nat did, and on the bridge Roland wants Rose to be his wife. But instead of Rose refusing Roland as she refused Nat. She accepts him. She also ends up marrying the right one. In the beginning, we hear that Nat wasn’t that interested in words as Rose was. And we do also hear that Rose thought Nat’s name was slight and swattable and therefor couldn’t see herself being together with him. But then later she ends up marrying Roland. She feels he is the one because his name has a more rolling sensation like her own name, Rose, and they share the same interests.
During this analysis, we find out that love is something that can change directions in seconds and everything can be turned upside down. Love is unpredictable due to Rose’s action in the text. She leaves Nat and finds the right one. But of course, Rose is a little bit out of her mind, she leaves someone who loves her and cares a lot for her because his name was slight. But later, ends up marrying her post office colleague because his name has the same rolling and curling movement as her own name. In this text, we find out that love has a different meaning for Rose and not judging people by their looks or personality but by their names
