In conclusion, Annan is a good leader regardless of his position in the UN because he is able to influence people to believe in his ideals and act with him towards this aim, without exercising his position of authority, but from his personal referent power.
3. In an era of globalization, the world is integrated in a larger scale than ever. Information transcends mere physical borders, and there will be much greater exposure to an array of cultures, practices and styles, which may at some time, influence your believes and direction. It is therefore even more important and relevant now to learn from Annan, and listen, but not be swayed easily by opposition as long as you believe strongly in your cause. We must have the confidence and courage to do what “…he felt he had to…” instead of what is more popular or easier to achieve.
With globalization, integration among people, companies and governments of different nations make societies today more culturally diverse. We now find ourselves dealing with more unfamiliar people of different faith, language, and behaviors. Therefore, like Annan, we have to adopt a range of leadership styles depending on the type of message that we would like to deliver, the context of the situation, and type of followers you are addressing.
Globalization has also weakened boundaries between nations, and more countries now have greater national interests invested beyond their own borders. Intervention naturally occurs when one’s self-interests are compromised, and therefore, like how Annan has his 5 virtues to define his moral compass, it will be ideal if the world of nations could have a set of universally respected virtues to act upon, and perhaps may some day achieve Annan’s vision of a truly dignified world.
