their lives today”). Lopez found his way to Ecuador by the mid-to-late 1970s. When he got there, that is when many young girls began to disappear. Many families tried to find these young girls all by themselves. A worried and concerned mother put out notices in the newspapers to ask people to help find her missing daughter (“Pedro Alonzo Lopez”). It is said that Lopez told the police that, "I like the girls in Ecuador, they are more gentle and trusting, more innocent” (“The 5 most gruesome serial killers & their lives today”). Before Lopez said that, the police thought that many of the young girls had disappeared due to sexual serfdom and adultery (Blanco). In 1980, Lopez was caught by Carlina Ramon and a couple of her friends when he tried, but failed to attract Carlina’s daughter to a quiet area away from the group of busy people. Lopez was then in custody with the police. He rejected to comply with the police. Then, Cordova Gudino, who was an investigator, pretended to be an inmate just like Lopez was. It took some time, but eventually Gudino gained Lopez’s trust. Lopez confessed to Gudino about the crimes that he committed, and even where he buried the bodies from his murders (“Pedro Alonzo Lopez”).

In 1980, Lopez was charged with killing 110 people (“Pedro Alonzo Lopez”). Later, he admitted to murdering an additional 240 young girls in Colombia and Peru. That adds up to 350 total murders. After a while, Lopez was incarcerated yet again from another failed kidnapping attempt (“The 5 most gruesome serial killers & their lives today”). On July 31, 1981, Lopez plead guilty for all of those crimes that he committed. They incarcerated him in Ambato, Ecuador. He received a maximum sentence of only sixteen years in prison because of the laws in Ecuador in the past. There were many people were very angry because they thought that Lopez should be in prison for much longer for killing that many innocent people. The laws in Ecuador have changed since then, but now the maximum sentence is only twenty-five years (“Pedro Alonzo Lopez”). The authorities did not believe Lopez at first when he made his confession. They found out that he was telling the truth when a huge flood revealed a huge grave where he buried most of his victims (“The 5 most gruesome serial killers & their lives today”). All of his victims were young girls that were between the ages of nine years and twelve years old (Blanco).

“On August 31, 1994, Lopez was released from Garcia Moreno prison after serving 14 years, having been released two years early for good behavior” (“Pedro Alonzo Lopez”). Even though he murdered several innocent people, he just put in 14 years in jail before he was ousted to Colombia. When he got there, the police tried to condemn Lopez of a twenty year old murder. However, in 1995 Lopez was announced crazy, and that is where he was institutionalized in a mental hospital (“Pedro Alonzo Lopez”). In an interview, Lopez was still in prison, and he called himself “the man of the century,” and he said that he was being freed because of his “good behavior” (“The 5 most gruesome serial killers & their lives today”). In February of 1998, Lopez was announced rational again, and he was discharged. His bail was set for only $50. After he was freed again, he paid a visit to his mother, who was becoming to be very elderly. He asked her if he could have his allowance. She told him that she was poor, and that she did not have any money. Lopez was infuriated, so he stole her only items that she had in her possession. He sold her bed and her chair to random passerbys in the neighborhood. After he got what he wanted, he disappeared again (“Pedro Alonzo Lopez”).

In 2002, he was incarcerated again in Colombia, and he was sentenced to life in prison (Castillo). He was put back in prison because the authorities had suspicions with whether or not he was connected with a murder in 2002. Shortly after that, he escaped from prison. It is unknown where Lopez is now (“Pedro Alonzo Lopez”). Lopez persevered through an early existence of vagrancy, brutality, sexual manhandling, and being imprisoned amid early adulthood. “Pedro Alonzo Lopez, known as the “Monster of the Andes,” is a convicted Colombian serial killer who is believed to have murdered more than 300 people” (“Pedro Alonzo Lopez”).
