C.S. Lewis is most famous among younger people and children for his series The Narnia Chronicles. He published the first book of the series The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe in 1950. Lewis was criticized about the characters and the setting and the fact that he was advertising the book as one for children but it dealt with good and evil in such a way that it was more of an adult book. However Lewis went back to his Boxen days of talking animals and fantasy worlds and the same people who criticized that the book was not acceptable for children because of the books content did not think adults would embrace it either. One of those doubters in fact was J.R.R. Tolkien, his friend and fellow Inkling author. Lewis did not listen to those doubters and went on to write six other books in The Narnia Chronicles: Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia., 1951; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, 1952; The Silver Chair, 1953; The Horse and His Boy, 1954; The Magician’s Nephew, 1955. It is said that because The Magician’s Nephew explains how Narnia was found that it was publishers who made it the first book in the series even though it was written last. The background story in The Magician’s Nephew is the ground work for the whole series and much like in Lewis’ young life where his mother died of cancer. Out of all seven books there were three movies made, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe was released in 2005, Prince Caspian in 2008 and finally The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 2010. .
C. S. Lewis met his wife later in life and married, but it was a short marriage and was said to have been doomed from the start. Lewis’ wife was a fan of his writing that he met through letters and in 1956 they were married. Joy Davidman Gresham was sixteen years younger than Lewis and unfortunately much like his mother died of cancer only four short years after their marriage began, and this death was hurtful to Lewis as well and caused him great pain, yet another influence on his life. C. S. Lewis would himself die on November 22, 1963 of kidney failure.
The legacy C.S. Lewis left behind is diverse at best because he touches so many lives through his style of writing. He reaches kids and adults alike, but also his style of writing is highly regarded throughout the Christian community but also within those who do not believe for the way it challenges them to believe. Lewis wrote with a passion about thinking and analyzing your thought and feelings and when you believe in something know why you believe in it and believe in it deeply and be able to defend why you feel that way. C.S. Lewis will continue to influence writers and believers for many years to come because of his passion and his beliefs.
