1.Introduction

Kentucky Fried Chicken, better known by its acronym KFC, is a franchise of fast food restaurants specializing in fried chicken, which belongs to the group Yum! Brands. KFC has more than 18,000 restaurants in 120 countries.

This group born at 1939, when Harland D. Sanders began preparing crispy chicken at the restaurant in North Corbin (Kentucky) from a recipe with eleven spices and aromas. In 1952, KFC opened the first franchise in Salt Lake City (Utah).

Sanders controlled the company until 1964, when it was sold to a group of local investors. He then moved over the control of several companies, until PepsiCo took all actions in 1986.

Currently, the face of Harland Sanders still linked to the restaurant chain as its corporate image.

2. History

KFC's history is divided in three parts: the beginning, the beginning of the franchise, and the acquisition of the franchise for the company PepsiCo.

2.1. The beginning:

Harland Sanders start working very young by the death of his father. In 1929, Sanders opened a gas station in North Corbin (Kentucky). The following year, in the same place he opened a small restaurant, Sanders Café. This restaurant began preparing fried chicken.

Sanders initially prepared chicken in a pan, but the food took a lot of time to make it; so nine years after Sanders began to make fried chicken with a pressure fryer. In 1940, Sanders patented his recipe for fried chicken, which he call original recipe.

Because of the success with sales of fried chicken, Sanders opened the first Kentucky Motel. In 1936, his work was recognized by Honorary Kentucky Colonel and in this year, he received a award by this institution.

During the Second World War, Sanders was forced to close his motel. And then, he sold his restaurant because the authorities were going to build a highway where the restaurant was located.

2.2. The beginning of the franchise:

During the 1950s, Colonel Sanders start to expand his business through fried chicken franchise, which called Kentucky Fried Chicken. In 1952, Sanders opened the first KFC restaurant franchise in Salt Lake City (Utah), with his partner Pete Harman.

In those years, Sanders increased the presence of the brand in other states through personal demonstrations by cities. To make these shows, Sanders had a white mustache, goatee and a completely white outfit. That image was subsequently adopted as the logo of the company. But in the some years later of the franchise of KFC, many restaurants took their own image

In 1956, Sanders moved the business headquarters to Louisville, Kentucky capital. The reason why he moved to Louisville was because there could get the ingredients and fryers easier.

Ten years after opening the first restaurant, KFC reached 600 franchises across the country. He was not able to have control over all its restaurants,so Colonel Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken decided to sell to a group of local investors for two million dollars plus a lifetime salary of $ 40,000 a year.

The new owners, John Y. Brown Jr. and Jack Massey, KFC franchise expanded by all US states, Puerto Rico and some foreign countries. This forced the owners to exercise greater control over the franchised restaurants, which acquired a common image based on red and white, the image of Colonel Sanders and KFC stands as a trademark.

Massey left the company due to disagreements with John Brown, and company shares fell sharply. In 1970 Colonel Sanders and his heirs gave up his seat on the board of directors of the company, and KFC entered a crisis that led to the closure of several restaurants.

In 1971 the company bought liquor Heublein group for 700 million dollars, and for the rest of the decade renovated restaurants. This period coincided with the death of Colonel Sanders leukemia on 16 December 1980. In his honor, the owners kept his face as identification of KFC. Finally, the renewal process concluded in 1980 with the introduction of the slogan We Do Chicken Right, in their advertising campaigns had a notable success in increasing sales of the brand.
