The culture of the organization will truly effect the employee’s reaction to innovation and change. From the moment someone is hired, training and ongoing employment should center around the goals set forth by upper management (Watkins, 2014). Flexibility around innovation and change should be an expectation set forth in all training and be encouraged on every level of the organization. If this type of employee development is ingrained in the organizational culture, it will be directly related to the goals for productivity through ongoing educational training.
If done properly, the types of goals should not conflict in an organization but rather encourage employees to strive to accomplish the corporate intent. The conflict occurs when managers disagree about priorities, productivity goals, and the effect that some innovations may have on profitability. In any scenario, it is important to not allow the conflict to detract from goal accomplishment.
Chapter 2: Suppose you have been asked to evaluate the effectiveness of the police department in a medium-sized community. Where would you begin? How would you proceed? What effectiveness approach would you prefer?
I would begin by evaluating the goals of the department in relation to the community, looking to see if the safety and crime goals of the community line up with the goals of the local police department. Using the goal approach would allow me to see if the goals set forth by the department are being attained by measuring effectiveness through recorded incidents in the community.
- Chapter 3: What types of organizational activities do you believe are most likely to be outsourced? What types are least likely?
The organizational activities that are most likely to be outsourced would vary according to the size of the organization and the actual function of the company. If you are a manufacturing facility, credit card processing, package delivery, contracting and sales would be outsourced. If you are a contractor, then manufacturing of parts and marketing would most likely be outsourced.
For many companies, accounting, product development, and sales would be maintained in house.
- How can/should a biblical worldview be applied?
As with any avenue you pursue in life, do everything as unto the Lord. No matter what position we hold, where we hold it, or who we work for, we first belong to Him. Colossians 3:22-24 says,
22Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. 23Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving (NIV).
We are no longer slaves, but there are days where we feel like we are chained to a desk, or slaves to our jobs. However, we are called to do everything with the sincerity of our hearts as if we are working for the Lord, regardless of how difficult the task.
