A red and gold color is used for the fantasy world. The opposite color of blue is red, which shows that the color-coding is used to create boundaries between the two different worlds. Also, while the redness shows a little bit of fear within Ofelia, the gold hue reminds the audience that the fantasy world is an escape for the young girl who is powerless in reality. It gives her the idea that she has more hope and power in the fantasy world. In the ending scene of Ofelia’s return and initiation to the Underworld, the hint of gold is used throughout the scenes to give them a more calm and safe feeling.
In between the two worlds, there is also the color green used for the world of the Faun. The color green is between the color red and blue, which ultimately represents the transition of Ofelia’s travel between the two worlds. Pan’s Labyrinth uses the colors well to represent Ofelia’s feelings to the different worlds as well as to create boundaries for the audience to notice.
Watching Pan’s Labyrinth was interesting. I was watching TV and accidentally stumbled on the movie. Throughout the movie, I was surprised by the violence, heavy weight, and eeriness of the movie. However, the visual of the movie was truly amazing, especially for the creatures of the fantasy world – not to mention how terrified I was when I saw the Pale Man. The film most definitely succeeded in delivering a mesmerizing fantasy world to the audience as it is a fantasy movie. The director communicated with the audience well by leaving small cues behind throughout the scenes for the audience to foreshadow and analyze. Del Toro successfully created the film, which you were able to notice something new that you haven’t noticed before every time you watch it. After watching the movie, I was definitely mesmerized and terrified at the same time; however, after a while, I wanted to return to the movie and watch it again just to see if I missed anything. Pan’s Labyrinth is definitely another movie that I would rate highly of and recommend others to watch it in theatres because the colors are much more vivid at a theatre.
I will always be scared of the Pale Man but love the complexity and depth of this film.
