Cases

The cases will be discussed in class. Students should read the cases and try to determine the issues in the cases before class. In class, we will discuss the following issues as they pertain to the case.

These are general guidelines: please examine issues that are necessary to examine and only report on if appropriate (feel free to add other areas to the analysis if needed):

- Facts of the case (10%)

- What are the financial and market issues in the industry and firm? Use of MOT techniques, such as Porter’s 5 forces, as well as market and financial reports, case information, other strategic data (20%)

- What is (are) the problem(s) and the potential solutions? (20%)

- What are the strengths and weaknesses of each possible solution? (20%)

- What are the theories and common sense thinking from business, economics, behavior, strategy or technology that can guide us in making smart decisions in this case? Refer to theories covered in book and readings etc. and be specific.(20%)

- What are the conclusions or recommendations that you would advise the company to undertake and why? Be specific (10%)

In analysis, the deeper that you go , the better. Make reasonable assumptions, for instance, saying a company needs to increase revenue may be a good first step that should be followed by discussion of the “how” the “what, when, where” that are relevant to the case. These come from different sources such as the case itself but as important are your observations of real life situations and your knowledge of business concepts from this course.

Reports on cases

-

Maximum 3 pages but no less than 2 pages ( not including cover page or cites), 1.5 lines spacing, 11 point Times Roman, Calibri or Arial font, page margins of 1” top, bottom, right and left.

- Case 2 will be a paper and a Power point of 8-10 slides .

Please note: students should be ready to discuss cases in class.

- Reports should be sent electronically before 1 pm on day of class session when case is scheduled on agenda. Send to instructor (friberg@unm.edu ). A hard copy will also be turned-in at the class session.

- Naming convention: when you submit written analysis of the cases, please name them as follows: Your First and Last Name, date, followed by Case Name.

- Analyze the case considering the major issues:

- Facts of the case: 2 or 3 sentences

- Financial and market issues in the industry and company: 4 or 5 sentences

- Problem statement (s) and potential solutions: 4 or 5 sentences (One sentence per solution)

- Strengths and weaknesses of each possible solution? : 1,2,3 sentences for pros and cons for each solution

- Theories and common sense thinking from business, economics, behavior, strategy or technology: 1 or 2 sentences outlining the major theory and its effect on case

- Conclusions or recommendations: 1 or 2 sentences outlining the major theory and its effect on case

Note: writing a few pages that cover all of the issues is harder than writing more. In real life, you will be asked many times to write short and concise analyses. This does not mean writing what you want and then stopping at 2 pages. It means writing all you need to write to do proper coverage but then distilling your writing to 2 to 3 meaningful pages.
