Key Activity Standard Deviation:

The objective of “Mean School Data” is to compare the two schools’ mean pendulum periods. It demonstrated fInding the range of all the numbers in the groups and how different ways of calculating them are similar to standard to deviation, but if you add the methods together it makes a Standard Deviation.

Key Activity Standard Deviation

The Objective of “Kai and Mai Spread Data” was to measure data spread in different ways. Kai’s, Mai’s, and Tai’s methods were all very different. Kai proposed finding the distance of each number in the list from the mean and then adding those distances to get a measure for the data. Tai’s method focused on finding the range for all of the numbers in the groups. Mai’s method was to ignore the highest and lowest number in the groups and find the spread between the rest of the numbers. From the activity “Making Friends with Standard Deviation” we picked 5 numbers. I picked 2,4,6,8,10. Then you find the mean which is 6. Then you subtract the mean from each of the original numbers. I got 4,2,0,2,4. Next you are asked to add a non zero number. I picked that we should add 2 to them all. When I added 2 to my original numbers the Standard Deviation (SD) and mean was still the same. The pattern I learned was adding or subtracting more or less to the numbers will make no difference. The difference maker was the space or distance between each number, If the difference between each number stayed the same, your SD also remained the same. In deviations we learned how to select or make new numbers, but still have the same mean.

Personal Growth:

For me the group work really helps me when I am confused and don’t get the material. I liked that I learned how to use a graphing calculator What I didn’t like was Quadratic Equations. Those were hard for me. The greatest academic growth for me was in my understanding of standard deviations. I’m a pro now. I liked doing the experiments when it was well taught. I not really sure what I would like to understand better. Maybe quadratic equations but those are hard.
