An advantage for digital readers is that they have built-in features that can benefit a student and support reading comprehension. These features are discussed on page 166 of the textbook under “New Literacies at Work”. Results of a study showed that second graders consistently accessed the built-in dictionary, activated the text-to-speech feature to listen to works and adjusted the font size of e-text (Evers, 2011). I really like that these devices have these features for individual customization and to support the student’s comprehension. An example of how this could help students in found in Amanda Sharp’s comment from the article thirty one review, “I have a little girl in my 3rd grade class that is significantly behind in reading and I can see how the use of an e-book especially one that will read to her, would benefit her and encourage her to continue practicing her reading strategies”. These features alone make digital readers more appealing to me and I would consider using them in the classroom.

After reading the topics, comments and other articles related to technology in the classroom I would say that it couldn’t hurt to try it! Technology is ever changing and will surly continue to change the educational world without a doubt. I always believed that cell phones and other devices may be more of a distraction then a learning tool however, with the examples that I listed and all the applications they can be used for I now believe that they can be incorporated successfully into a classroom. I do believe that instructor needs to understand the technology and express their expectations about the technology to the class first thing in order to be more successful. I would like to see more action research about the use of technological devices in the classroom with the advantages and disadvantages. I would also like to experiment with a class to test the learning outcomes of students that did use technological devices compared to those students that did not. Maybe technology in the classroom is not such a bad thing after all. I think it honestly depends on the instructor and how it is used in the classroom as well as the students understanding what is expected of them.
