dry port does not only save jobs but also create job opportunities at the dry port itself and also at companies that locate themselves nearby (Roso, 2010).

The rail connections are a lot timelier than the road connections and that is a big advantage since companies lose big money if their consignments miss the ship, for example due to the cost of keeping inventory (Bangalore mirror, 2016). The customs clearance unit at Whitfields that handles cargo bound towards US, Saudi Arabia and Europe also saves a lot of time and space at the served harbors which reduce strain on the port infrastructure (Dayal, 2007). For dry ports that are at a mid-range distance from the served harbors, which is the case for Whitfield, other potential benefits at the seaport is less congestion and improved service (Bask et at., 2014).

According to Roso (2015). the lack of space at the seaports makes it more economical beneficial to use the dry ports instead of the sea ports as depots for the containers. For the seaport cities potential advantages is also less congestion and more land use opportunities (Bask et at., 2014). Another effect from the dry ports is less trafficked roads, for example there has been a drastic reduction in traffic on the Bengaluru-Chennai highways due to the rail connectivity since it began operating last year (Bangalore mirror, 2016).

Since usage of the dry port and intermodal transport means that companies have to consider train time tables when planning shipments this is a less flexible alternative. Another possible drawback of dry ports, stated by Roso and Lumsden (2009), is that road transport operators may lose market shares if customers shift from using only trucks to the intermodal alternative for shipments to sea ports. Another potential drawback is that the intermodal alternative via the dry port causes an extra transshipment (Roso, 2015). The surrounding areas of Whitfield has also experienced increased container trucks on the streets causing more congestions and traffic gridlock during peak hours (Bangalore Mirror, 2016). This means that some of the problems previously experienced in the sea port cities is now affecting the cities around the dry port instead.

6. Explain if the assigned facility could be a dry port according to the concept explained at the lectures and in the paper A4!

According to Roso et al., 2009 a dry port is an inland intermodal terminal directly connected to a seaport by rail, where customers can leave and/or collect their standardized units as if directly to the seaport. This statement is very well applicable to the ICD at Bangalore. Also from the services offered at the facility are in lines with the ones described in the lectures. Further, we can classify the ICD as a midrange dry port since it is in the outskirts of Bangalore city and provides services to importers and exporters across the southern parts of India. We could also conclude that this dry port had an inside out type of directional development since the Container Corporation of India (a public sector) initiated development of the Inland Container Depot at Bangalore to facilitate varies importers and exporters within and around the city.
