An individual reflection on you the entrepreneur

Before doing this project I had read many books on my favourite entrepreneurs and how they went on to rule industries. I always wondered how these entrepreneurs took the first step and created their entity. This project was the perfect opportunity for me to get the best possible experience and values I could get. By creating a social enterprise, I had to think and act like a real entrepreneur and I don’t think I would have too many fears in getting involved in the business world and learning from my own mistakes.

According to Branson (2008) “Throwing yourself into a job you enjoy is one of the life's greatest pleasures!” As I have such a high interest in the student accommodation and welfare I found it very simple to keep myself motivated while working on this project throughout the year. I think an essential factor that kept me driven was the fact that it was a personal issue I was determined to overcome.

Being a student it enabled me to think how the rest of the target market were thinking which I felt was big bonus in coming up with a short term solution. This opened a new window of thought as it enabled me to think from a different perspective, if an issue is effecting me then it’s surely effecting other students. In this case it was the fact that there was no short term solution for the student housing crisis. Students had been forced to defer years, and those that hadn’t were coming from all areas of the country to get to college in Dublin. By providing students with a short term solution it would increase the standard of living for students which was the overall aim.

This was the first time I had critically thought from various perspectives in order to solve a problem. While this is something that can be taught and learned in a lecture hall, the real acid test is if you are willing and able to undertake the task physically.

Being a group adds the perfect amount of pressure as you are not only doing it for yourself but for your team. I think there was other pressures that drove us on: none of us wanted to let down other members of the group.

Our group consisted of Myself, Shane Lynch and Adam Curtis (who joined our group late). Over the course of the year it was a rollercoaster of emotion that paid off. We shared disputes, arguments, strong opinions, ups and downs but not once did we lose sight of the fact that all contributions were being forwarded with the intentions of benefitting the project and our social enterprise. Each member of the group added something different and this was reflected in presentations and each assignment. Any obstacle we encountered we overcame, we learnt from the experience, moved on and our collective spirit helped us to acquire a stronger approach for the next assignment.

It took longer than expected to adjust from doing individual assignments to working in a team. Different personalities clash and what we realised from working together was that you can both be correct. The question was, how do we use these different personalities to benefit us as a social enterprise? We soon found out each other’s strong points and used each attribute to our advantage. Having a good team makes everything a lot easier because everything you do is contagious. One can motivate another and provide theories and creative ideas. This we found forced us to open our brains and by doing so, narrow mind reviews got no air time. According to Moursund (2007) “two brains are better than one” so I can only assume that three brains are even more beneficial when used effectively. I think toward the end of the final semester everything began to click and we all knew how to use each other strengths to our advantage, our individual weaknesses were eliminated and replaced by bursts of sustained motivation.

One things I gained from working in a team is how to listen effectively. I felt that both members of my team helped me to listen more actively, I became more open-minded to advice and I can now acknowledge the benefits from this learning experience. Overall I feel the end result of working within a group has matured my knowledge as an entrepreneur. It has helped me as an individual to see my weaknesses and strengths, to appreciate the benefits of teamwork and the contributions that everybody has to make. Overall, this year has not only been a great learning experience, it was almost an adventure in self-development.
