In the Liverpool vs Dortmund game there was a total of 33 number of overlapping runs that happened in this game with 18 of them coming from Liverpool and 16 of them coming from Dortmund. The overlapping runs mainly occurred both right and left flanks for both teams with the fullbacks Nathanael Clyne and Moreno overlapping runs, as well as piszczek and schmelzer.

In this game Liverpool and Dortmund both set out a 4-2-3-1 this formation encourages the fullbacks on both teams to attack the opposition, at the same time they would need to know when to attack. This is for the reason that if they get caught out on the attack they would leave a lot of space in behind, making it hard for the centre backs to cover and track the oncoming runners.

As the game progressed in the early stages Dortmund switched their formation to a 4-4-2 this gave Dortmund more possession of the ball in the centre of the pitch put forced Liverpool to play out to the full backs and get the ball to.

30 minutes into the game Piszczek does a perfect overlapping run driving in to the box which allowed him to square it to Aubameyang creating a goal scoring opportunity.

On the 65th minute Joe Allen demonstrated how effective overlapping runs are for example he laid the ball to Moreno then followed his pass overlapping Moreno which made the defender track his run leaving Moreno to play the ball into the space created by joe Allen which allowed countino the space to do a give and go and score Liverpool’s goal.

Although Liverpool made 18 overlapping runs only 8 of this was completed this was due to Dortmund shutting down the space very quickly but as the game progressed Liverpool changed their formation to 4-4-2 which allowed Clyne and Moreno to dominate the flanks with overlapping runs.

In the Bayern munich vs jeventus 1st leg there was a total of 25 overlapping runs within that game, with 11 of them coming from bayern munich and 14 from jeventus.

As the game kicked of bayern munich lined up against jeventus with a 4-3-3 formation, this formation naturally alows the full backs to link up with the midfielders and support the play in the oppents attacking third simply by overlapping runs, jeventus new that Bayern Munich would look to get in behind them through there full backs lahm and Alba so jeventus started the game with a 4-4-1-1 with pogba screening lahm which natural cut out passes for lahm on the flanks forcing him to look and play more into the centre of the pitch instead of the wings. Because of this tactic from juventus this prevented the build up from the full backs.

Out of 11 runs bayern munich only competed 6 of them due to Pogba effected screening role against Lahm blocking his path preventing his teammates finding him. On the other hand jeventus had more overlapping runs due to the fact Bayern Munich dominated heavily within the midfield forcing jeventus to play from the back with the full backs and play on the wings.

In the 2nd half of the game most of bayern munich overlapping runs happened because bayernbayern munich started to overload jeventus of the wings this made jeventus drop and defendend deep. When bayern munich overloaded the wings it prevented jeventus playing out from the back like they was doing in the first half of the game. By bayern munich doing this they where able to equalise on the 90th mintue with a overlapping run on the right wing, crossed in and muller scoreing with a header.

In addition to this Bayern Munich scored a goal from a overlapping run as well as 3 goal scoring oppertunitys. This just shows that overlapping runs played a very important role for them to get this victory.
