them in a battle at the Thames river. In this battle native american chief, Tecumseh, was killed.

The Ghent Treaty was signed on December 24,1814 but it wasn’t ratified by the U.S. government until February of 1815. This peace treaty for the two nations offered the cessation of hostilities, the restoration of conquered territories, and the setting up of boundary commissions. Unfortunately word of the peace treaty didn’t reach all troops in war. The battle of New orleans was fought between January 8 and January 18 of 1815. This was the final major battle of the war. None of the troops fighting knew about the Treaty of Ghent. January 8, 1815, the British marched against General Andrew Jackson’s lines of defense. The main attack began under darkness and a heavy fog, but as the British neared the main enemy line the fog lifted, exposing them to withering artillery fire. The only British success of the battle was the delayed attack on the west bank of the Mississippi River. This is where Colonel William Thornton’s brigade attacked and overwhelmed the American line. On January 9, British naval forces attacked Fort St. Philip, which protected New Orleans from an amphibious assault from the gulf of Mexico. The American forces, in addition to gunners working from ships, were able to fend off the attacks. They withstood ten days of bombardment by cannon before the British ships withdrew on January 18, 1815(War of 1812.) As strong victory and pride came to americans because of this.

British casualties for the entire campaign totaled 2,459 with 386 killed, 1,521 wounded, and 552 missing. While American casualties for the entire campaign totaled 333 with 55 killed, 185 wounded, and 93 missing. This was due to Americans fighting in their land and part of Canada, while the British had to come over seas. Britain ended the trade restrictions and the impressment of American sailors, thus removing two more causes of the war. After two years of warfare, the major causes of the war had disappeared. Neither side had a reason to continue or a chance of gaining a decisive success that would compel their opponents to cede territory or advantageous peace terms. Alt ought neither nations gained anything from the war The United states had its first war and was proud of its victory.
