Question may rise as to why this specific event is a dysfunction. In order to answer that question we should look at the adverse effects it has on the military community. First of all, it caused the total collapse of one of the major institution of state security with almost 67000 soldiers (BIPSS annual report on BDR mutiny). The death of many top ranked soldiers of BDR was major blow to the institution itself as well as our national security since the primary duty of the BDR is to guard and patrol our national borders. Moreover during the commotion many criminal groups went inside and looted ammos and many weapons. This event also brings into question the credibility of our intelligence organization since a major attack like that cannot be done without proper planning and execution. This makes us more vulnerable and cautious toward future attacks. It also triggered a chain reaction of internal stability within the structure. This was fatal blow to our democracy since the country only recovered from the events of 1/11 through the newly elected government. These consequences alone don’t make the event a dysfunction but what make it a dysfunction are the aftermaths of the consequences. Since the coup took place the general public is finding it bit difficult to put their trust in the intelligence agencies. A sense of distrust between “Command” and “troops”, “Institutions” and “State”, “Organization” to “Organization” is slowly taking place. Intermediate measures have been taken to restore and regain the former trust. The entire structure of the military has been changed with new chain of commands and new senior officers have been promoted. Even the name of the organization has also changed from Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). Internal rules and regulations have also been made stricter so that event of this magnitude never happens again. All of this falls under dysfunction because it disrupted and caused a distortion in an already established institution and caused major changes to happen with equally adverse consequences.
