Smartphones not only threaten our relationships, but also cause many problems with education, especially for children. It is difficult for students to concentrate in class since the phones enable students to chat, play games, watch videos and surf the Internet. Researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln found that university students check their phones approximately 11 times a day while in class. More than 80 percent have stated that they affect their learning and a quarter admitted that their grades had fallen as a result. All the entertainment in the smartphones only encourages students to waste their time on it and saps their motivation to grasp the knowledge they need. Also, they automatically make students depend on them to answer questions and avoid any thinking. his takes away from their overall intelligence. In addition, many students misuse their phones to cheat in exams by using the Internet or collaborating with classmates which also prevents students from learning properly using their own ability. Apparently, one third of teens use smartphones to cheat in school according to a Common Sense Media poll. Without the phones, students would be able to be efficiently immersed in their studies without distractions. Something that is more important than keeping people smart is keeping them healthy. However, smartphones could cause some dangers to the human body. Many people are unaware of the harmful electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from smartphones, so the majority of people take their smartphones to bed and everywhere they go. The EMR radiation may cause DNA damage, brain dysfunction, and sleeping problems.

Moreover, extreme use of smartphones can cause poor eyesight.

In spite of the fact that these phones have revolutionized our way of life, they have adverse effects on face-to-face interactions. They also distract students from studying and do harm to human health.

Granted, economic factors also play a part in the struggle of technology vs. physical activities. More than ever, parents are working over 40 hours per week to make ends meet while coordinating their schedules with their kids schedules, and they find it difficult to make time for physical activities. Also, families with economic challenges have to choose between afterschool activities like sports and paying rent or/ the mortgage. It is a fine line that is challenging to say the least.
