The anions that the Unknown may contain are NO3 -, Cl-, Br-, I-, SO42-. Since the Unknown did not react with warm sulfuric acid, group 2 anion testing was then done. Group 2 anions form soluble Ba 2+ precipitates when added with NH3 and BaCl2 (Dash, 2011, p. 38). The Unknown did not form a precipitate with aforementioned reagents, only forming a clear, colorless solution with no visible reaction which means that the Unknown does not contain SO42- since sulfates form white BaSO4 precipitate. (Svehla, 1996, p. 211).

The anions that the Unknown may contain are NO3 -, Cl-, Br-, I- . Group 3 testing was then done by addition of AgNO3 solution. Upon addition, a formation of white precipitate occurred. This eliminates the possibility of the presence of NO3 – since nitrates do not form precipitates with AgNO3. Cl-, Br-, I- form precipitate with AgNO3 but of varied colors; AgBr and AgI are both yellow precipitates (Svehla, 1996 p. 193). AgCl is the only white precipitate in the given choices which makes Cl- the anion possibly present in the Unknown based on the equation: NaCl + AgNO3 → AgCl↓ + NaNO3 (Svehla, 1996, p. 191)

A confirmatory test was done in order to validate the presence of Cl- in the Unknown. The white precipitate was acidified with dilute nitric acid and was heated. White precipitated persisted since AgCl is insoluble in dilute acids (Svehla, 1996, p. 191), therefore, confirming the presence of Cl- in the Unknown.

IV. CONCLUSION

The Unknowns contain Cl- as their anions.
