To name a few examples: The Somalia Tragedy (1993), the Rwandan Genocide (1994), the Bosnian Massacre (1995 – just one year after Rwanda), the Israeli-Lebanon Border Murders (2000) and in 2004 the UN investigated 150 allegations of sexual misconduct by peacekeeping forces in Burundi and the DRC. The list goes on and on around the fact of the United Nations’ countless failures, and the worryingly shorter list of the UN’s few successes.

Not only because of the many failures of trying to achieve peace in LEDC’s and other countries across the world that the UN is not important, there are also institutional problems affiliated with the UN. For example, whereby General Assembly resolutions with widespread support can be stymied by a single veto from one of the Permanent 5 (P5) – the permanent 5 meaning the 5 fixed countries who have a place on the security council, these countries include the victors of World War 2: The United Kingdom, the USA, China, Russia and France. This has led to unilateral action by countries such as the USA and organizations such as NATO, being able to undermine the authority of the UN, and to a lack of credibility for the UN in dealing with many issues including but not limited to: the ongoing conflict in Syria. This power is also seen as unfair from the perspective of countries such as Japan or even Brazil who feel as they have a strong(er) economic and sustainable nation therefore feeling that they deserve to be a part of the P5, and creates a tense atmosphere between member states – destroying perhaps the main motive of the UN: “International Collaboration”

In conclusion, it is clear to see the effects of the UN have a limited effect on the maintenance of peace and cooperation between countries in today’s society. As evidence further suggests that the UN is not important as it was ultimately made to be somewhat of a ‘change maker’ this has failed to occur if we view the organization from the bigger picture. Therefore I believe that the UN is not an important organization.
