Sam should select Casual Design (Test markets) in this case because Tom would like to know the reactions fo customers to new flavor cereal. By giving the larger sample for customers from around the country, company can identify and make the improvements in the new product before a widespread sales launch.

According to the textbook, Burns, A. C., Bush R. F., and Nash, J. (2012) write, “the less that is known, the more likely it is that exploratory research will be used.” When we apply in the company’s newspaper, it is easy to see that company should be done an Exploratory Research to clarify the problem. When digital marketing has become more popular thesedays, using traditional channel such as print advertising with no color is virtually not common at all. Therefore, first of all, Sam should give Phyllis a background information as well as secondary data analysis about the dramatic change in customer behavior nowadays. He also can make some factual surveys and interviews to clarify which chanels/ ways modern people prefer to read ads nowadays. It would somewhat help Phyllis decide to change his company’s strategy, whether company should adding colour for their paper ads.

Sam should use true Experimental Design (Before-After with Control Group) for this toothbrush company. Since they have 2 promotion campaigns right now, they can see the differences between the after and before measurement in experimental group when exposing 2 different campaigns. After testing and seeing the result in a period of time, the more efficient campaign will be kept for their business advantage.
