As an ethnographer, I’m drawn to the vegan community because I want to gain a bigger awareness of the benefits of a vegan lifestyle, as well as educate myself about the practices and costs behind the production of animal products. Moreover, I want to learn how to tell if a product is vegan and familiarize myself with the less obvious animal derived ingredients that show up in unsuspecting products.

Food justice is highly complex, and we live in a world in which the use of animals for human benefit is definitely taken for granted, often invisible, and embedded culturally. To be clear, I am not a vegan and have had difficulty transitioning toward that lifestyle despite the knowledge I’ve acquired, however, I can start figuring out ways to pro-actively affect the meat industry directly. Animals that have already been killed or died have already met their fate. The best thing I can do is to work on a way to stop the industry from doing things in such a horrible way. So, if I’m going to consume meat, I will try to eat meat from small farms, or from larger producers who have validated to the world that they are committed to cruelty-free production. That means pork producers that don’t use farrowing crates, the horrible cages sows are kept in as piglet-making machines. It means using hormone-and antibiotic-free beef. I will not resent anyone for what they choose to eat, or not eat. I respect vegans, and I will continue to to find a place where my values and health are both equally satisfied. Perhaps, the most disregarded position of vegans is they are defending the innocent; vegans are fighting for animals, and in reality, animals do not have a voice. We as individuals have a choice, the very least we can do is insist a humane treatment of animals. That process has been made in the right direction like raising free-range chickens and producing cage-free eggs. In the end, vegans are eager to take on a battle that many of us are not brave enough to accept.
