Another psychological effect of domestic violence is depression, which is prolonged sadness, feelings of hopelessness, unexplained crying, and loss of energy and interest in daily activities (MayoClinic.Org, n.d.). It is the most common symptom displayed by domestic violence survivorsvi and has numerous treatment methods. The number one way to treat depression is to speak up—find professional help and get social support. Having someone who is willing to listen and advise can help with the feelings of loneliness and helplessness. Medical professionals may recommend medicinal treatment along with a lifestyle change as well; including exercise, diet change, stress reduction and changes in your nutrition and sleeping patterns. Survivors should also take into consideration that treatment, no matter which route is decided to be best, take time and persistence. It can become overwhelming and frustrating, but that is a normal step to recovery and with time, they will begin to feel much better.

The effects of domestic violence on our victims and survivors are enormous, and impossible to understand or measure without actually experiencing it. They carry those burdens and the aftermath with them every day—pessimism, hopelessness, aggravation, and even denial. The impact of the abuse is great and can bear immense consequence. However, there are so many resources available to victims that can help them seek professional help. They also have an incredible support system right at home, which they can utilize at any time needed. Victims should never feel that violence is okay and should use all available sources to speak up. They should know not to be ashamed of their story; it will inspire others and even help save a life. With patience, support, and persistence, domestic violence victims can and will become survivors.
