“The result was Projectionist, the world’s second tumblelog” ( Alfonso, 2013). Tumblr officially launched in 2007 which was a hit mostly with the younger audience. In 2013, Yahoo paid 1.1 billion dollars to own Tumblr, with David Karp staying as the CEO. Ever since, Tumblr’s active user rates have went down and the estimated number of active users is 30-50 million monthly, “That is a significant drop from the 300 million monthly uniques.” (Yarow, 2013). Tumblr was supposed to revive Yahoo by expanding its audience and boosting its declining advertising business. Instead, by early 2015 Tumblr was at risk of being dragged down by Yahoo.

Impact of Tumblr to its users

Tumblr is changing online activism. Tumblr is typically known as a site with mostly pop culture focused users until it found itself, “at the forefront of political discourse. All it took was four simple words: “binders full of women.” (Honigman, 2014). The infamous quote was stated by Mitt Romney on the 2012 presidential debate. He was given a question addressing gender inequality and wrongly answered. Although it was unintentional, the damage was done. Shortly after, Tumblr was filled with posts about the incident. Some believes this is a crucial importance in relation to political debates because it draws more attention to very important political and social issues. Most of this influence comes from Tumblr’s large number of audience and because of this it has attracted wide variety of critics. Tumblr opened up opportunities for people to become more aware of the issues and voice out their opinions, “Social media created an enormous opportunity for converting more folks to higher levels of engagement," said Rubenstein” (Honigman, 2014). Tumblr helps drive a better understanding around an issue that might even cause an action in the future.

                     Future of Tumblr

The future of tumblr will be more high tech. It will be easier to access anytime and anywhere. The holographic screens creates a seemingly continuous viewing area from these many different perspective views and as the user move from side to side in front of it the user has the ability to look around within a moving 3D scene. Like a true hologram this device does not require glasses to view it. Also there is a device called an Oculus Rift where the user can see and hear, but in my vision a feature will be added to the device where the user could be able to touch things too. In the future, users will be able to experience things that are not necessarily possible for the user as it might be too far but now they will be able to even though they might just be sitting at home or at their office.

                                  Conclusion

David Karp is a wunderkind who used Anarchaia and Projectionist as inspiration to create the blogging platform called Tumblr. It enables users to share their own content and allows users to discover other’s artistic work. Tumblr also became a platform for online activism and it influences people to become more engaged in important issues due to its large number of users. This tumble blog became successful because it offers something unique that no other social media can. Tumblr has been sold to Yahoo and currently has less users.
