Discuss the five different printmaking techniques and examples for each.

Intaglio printing involves the use of a metal plate. The ink settles in the sunken areas and the smooth surface of the plate is wiped clean. Engraving an imagine is an example of Intaglio printing. Lithograph is a technique in which the artist draws directly on a flat stone. The stone is dampened with water and then inked. Example a piece of paper that is pressed against the stone, the ink on the parts is transferred to it.

Relief- A printing process in which the impression is created by the uncarved areas or the unprepared surface areas. Wood engraving is an example of relief. Stencils are attached to a screen to ensure that the ink passes through in the correct place example book illustrations and greeting cards. Calligraphy- is making a print of a collage. Example would be a collage of different fabric on one card board.

What is a mono print and what is meant by an edition of prints?

A monoprint is a printed painting. Where no two prints are alike. The images can be same, but editing is not possible. The appearance of the monoprint is in the translucency that creates a quality of light that is different from a painting on paper or a print. Monoprints are created by manually adding or removing ink from a plate which is then printed using a printing press. Monoprints combine different printed inks and paper, creating a surface.

An edition of prints is the process of preparing a set of prints. The prints must be signed, numbered, and go through to make sure they are all the same. when a print is made, the printing elements are prepared such as: blocks and metal, then numerous copies of the print are made.
