“Non-Work Application”

“ In my last semester we had a production planning and control project. Where we were a team of 6 people. The leader of the group always called upon the team members who were actually busy with lot of work and flexibility of schedule was discouraged by him. The fact that if even one person was unavailable for a project meeting for a valid reason. The project meeting used to be called off and nothing gets to be done. We were late on our schedule. Nobody took an active responsibility to work on it and rather they depended upon each other to get things done. There was definitely a conflict in our group. The members intently avoided meetings cause nobody used to work on the project and wasted time. We could have used the first point of principle negotiation to get things done and separate the problem from people. This way we would have defined the problem the group was actually facing. This way we could have worked out on a solution and hence ben more productive.”

8. What is “principled negotiation”?

Ans. A process of negotiation that aims to achieve a win-win result. This approach to negotiation focuses on the interests of the parties and emphasizes conflict management and conflict resolution. Because the goal of principled negotiation is to find a mutually shared outcome, it is sometimes referred to as “win-win”. This represents a very different approach from the stereotypical view of a tough negotiation where one party will inevitably lose, while the other wins. A win-win negotiation is one where the agreement cannot be improved by further discussions. There is no value left on the table and all creative options have been thoroughly explored.

“Work-Experience Application”

“I can relate to my use of principled negotiation when I was at Nine Planets Pvt Ltd. Where the manager asked me for a schedule/ timing change for my work. I didn’t accept it so I used some of techniques of principle negotiation unknowingly. I used the third point of principle negotiation i.e- Before trying to reach agreement, invent options for mutual gain. Where I accepted to match his change in timings by also stating that I will not be able to work Saturday’s. This way the manager and I avoided conflict and fulfilled our interests. So it was a win-win situation for both of us.”
