As we have defined in class Socialization is “social learning about particular social roles and how to fulfill them” (Class Lecture). For the sake this paper and readings the setting happened to be a middle-school. There are four main components that we discussed when it came to socialization. They included: Periods, Goals, Agents, and settings.

The period of this book is adolescence. The study only included those students in a Midwestern middle school (the setting of this study), to be more specific those between the ages of eleven and fourteen years old. The agents in this case were the teachers, researchers and the student’s peers.

The book covered not only the topic of language but how social groups are formed. The book discussed the use of the term slut. I found this chapter interesting in how middle-schoolers differed their expectations of behavior within a relationship. The book’s topic of social groups I connected to more because it was something I noticed while I was in school. The book discussed the importance of popular vs unpopular in the school setting. I found it to be interesting “School Talk pointed out the possibility of adding more sports teams to give more students opportunities. I believe this to be a good thing, however I also believe schools should shine the same amount of light aka attention on non-sports functions. That would help to bridge the gap of those students who feel forgotten or left out. As well as, ending the myth that one group of students is more important than another.

Gary and Barrie seem to agree that boys tend to express their strength. Gary didn’t focus any attention on girls because more research had been done on them. Both seems to draw the fact that children’s views on gender differences are salient.

Main point of the class lecture and the readings was that “gender is a social construction. As well as adolescence is a time where seeds on how to think and act are being shaped” (Class Lecture).
