in the text, “A congratulatory comment may be best in a public forum, while a sensitive question is best asked in a private setting. Some choices between public and private settings are obvious.” (Hynes, 2015)

Since Trent was about to leave on a business trip, it compounded on the stress of the situation. She should have given him at least a week’s notice prior to his trip, or waited for him to return. “The actual timing of the communication is another important consideration. Communication behavior appropriate at one time may be inappropriate or even detrimental at a different time. It is not appropriate to try to get the attention of someone immediately before an important meeting” (Hynes, 2015)

Even with the delayed notice, Rye may have still been able to salvage the situation had she considered how to gracefully and tactfully deliver the message. Rather than simply stating “I’m resigning” Rye should have eased into the announcement and shown gratitude for the opportunity. Something as simple as, “Thank you so much for your time and interest in me, and for the position here. It has certainly been a great experience. Unfortunately, I am seeking a position that is a little more aligned with my career goals” would have been enough to change the overall outcome. It is always recommended that you end a negative conversation on a positive not, “You may find yourself working with your current boss/colleagues again in a different organization in the future. So use your last line to keep a connection open. In your final conversation, try something like, "I hope our paths cross again." (Hull, n.d.)

How did Trent foster Rye’s reluctance to communicate?

From the information provided, it was not obvious that Trent solicited any feedback from Rye regarding her goals or future plans at any time during her employment. Had he known she was only intending to stay with the company for a short period of time, he would have had a strategy in place to off-load her projects. If he would have asked her, she would have most likely told him of her intentions early on. This would have given him sufficient time to make a transition. Additionally, the praise he gave her was not ill-intentioned to pressure her into staying, but he did not ask for her input before assuming she was there to stay.

What are some possible long-term repercussions of the way Rye handled her resignation?

The manner in which Rye resigned could not only burn a bridge for possible opportunities in the future, but could reap havoc on her professional reputation as well. If her future employers call Trent for a reference, it is possible he may give a negative review of Rye. Whether you are turning down a job offer or resigning from your current position, it is important to ensure you end the conversation in a way that will maintain a professional relationship and open doors for future opportunities.

Conclusion

Communication serves a vital role in determining the future of your career. The way you approach a conversation can be the turning point for a promotion or termination. Whether you are in a position you plan to retire in or if you are ready to transition to a new career field, the way you communicate to your leaders and peers will establish a network that will determine your next step. In my career there have been instances when I was uncomfortable to approach a conversation, but if I had avoided these situations and not given myself a moment to articulate my thoughts, it could have changed the result and I wouldn’t be where I am today. Taking some time to consider how to properly approach a situation, with consideration of your environment, receiver, and tone, can ultimately take what is perceived as a negative conversation to a positive outcome.
