“Oh, that’s too bad. I wouldn’t think it’d be difficult for you to find a date.” I smirked.
“And why is that?” she asked. “I have someone in mind to go with, but he hasn’t come forward.”
What’s this? Who could this person she had in mind be? I panicked. My confident ambition
became worry and doubt. I brainstormed a bit. Who could it be? She wasn’t too popular and wasn’t
much of a flirt. She was one of the nice girls that didn’t crave attention. We shared a lot of the same
classes together, the same lunch time and I never noticed her fancying anyone. Never heard anything,
no rumors. I wondered, who?? I was flushed, and sweating. I began trembling. I should ask her now. Or
should I not? My fear of rejection grew with each passing moment.
“Hello, JR? Are you there? You zoned out for a minute.” she said, tapping me on the shoulder.
“And you’re sweating, gross.”
“I’m sorry; did you say you had someone in mind to go with? Who?” I asked, finally.
“Well since you’re being a little dork about it, it’s you that I want to go with.” she said.
“With me??” I couldn’t believe my ears.
“Yes, with you, if that’s okay.” she said. “I knew you wanted to go with me, but I knew you were
too chicken to ask me.”
“Yes. Yes I was.” I said, embarrassingly.
And suddenly, I felt relief. Relief someone would find when a cool breeze hits their face on a
hot, sweaty day. I really liked this girl, and I almost let fear get in the way of my mission. Well,
technically, it did. But I was going to ask her, I really was! I’m sure it was just going to be a matter of
time, in time for the winter formal.
