Conclusion

In conclusion, based on the past, present, and future trends within the corrections field it appears that there is a need to reduce the overall prison population to meet the challenges of not having enough qualified candidates, continuous budget cuts, and the managing of a prison facility. Law makers and criminal justice administrators play a big role in changing the approach to fighting crime. Things such as treatment programs, intervention programs or rehabilitation programs are said to help to reduce recidivism and to reduce the need for future prison beds. Rather than managing offenders in the conventional caseload model, supervision agents are responsible for more actively supervising offenders; problem-solving to initiate changes in offenders; and helping offenders obtain employment, social support, and needed treatment (Mackenzie, 2001). In terms of meeting the demands for correctional staff, correctional agencies will be forced to change how they appeal to a younger and more diverse group of individuals entering the workforce. Correctional agencies can become more competitive by making changes to salaries offered, more appealing benefits packages, and by advertising the job in a way that allows the public to understand that the job does require technical skills. While these changes can help meet the challenges faced, there is still a need to reduce the overall prison population.
