Topic Related to the Computer Applications in Criminal Justice

A topic I have found interesting is the use of body cameras for law enforcement officers. Nearly everyone walks around with a smart phone these days, and can quickly upload videos to social media. Almost daily, there is a video of law enforcement being too rough on a perpetrator or having to draw their service weapon. Unfortunately, these videos do not always show the entire situation. By making the body cameras a requirement, officers, and upper level management within the criminal justice system will be able to view the situation as it occur, without the bias of the video posted to social media. To many lives have been affected by social media and local news spinning a story, and the use of body cameras would be an effective step in reducing the number of false allegations against law enforcement.

Increasing My Knowledge

As I progress in this course, I hope to expand my knowledge base on the use of computer applications within the field of the criminal justice system that are on the cutting edge of modern technology. I have worked with Microsoft word, excel, and power point at a basic user level. As this course progresses, I hope to expand my knowledge base within the areas, as well as expand my understanding of how different computer systems are utilized is the day to day operations within the criminal justice system. Furthermore, I hope to gain a greater understanding of the MDC system, and how advances in technology with the body cameras are going to continue to assist law enforcement personnel in the performance of their duties. Every second of video that an officer’s camera records can be taken into evidence, providing a first-hand account of what took place during any interaction with a subject (How Technology is Changing Law Enforcement, n.d.).
