7:30 am, only leaving me 30 more minutes to fish before stuffing myself with bacon, eggs and delicious cinnamon rolls. I start to lose hope of catching a pike, due to only pulling in a couple of dinky fish and one admirable bass. I decide to explore the west side of the lake which rarely gets any action due to its lengthy row. I haul up the anchor and strenuously shake all of the weeds and mud off of it. Accelerating through the water I arrive about 25 yards off of a fallen pine tree that lies rotting in the water. I position myself in the ideal position for fishing the tree as my anchor plummets to the bottom. I grab my rod that is rigged up with a perch pattern rattle trap. I fish the left side of the log which is closest to the shore, only coming up with weeds. I decide to change my strategy and work the right side of the aging log which sits 10 feet from a dense weed bed. I chuck my lure 30 yards to log. I count in my head one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand, four one thousand, five one thousand, making sure the ½ ounce lure gets to the bottom. I jerk my rod tip up, keeping the lure off the bottom. I begin a steady retrieve as a feel a firm bump, I continue to reel and as the lure gets closer to the boat the line tenses up and the drag starts screaming and my heart starts pounding. I vigorously set the hook and keep tension on the line. The fish continues to swim as it desperately tries to take cover in the tree branches; however, I guide my rod and steer the fish out into the open water. The now recognizable Northern Pike leaps from the water eagerly shaking its head hoping to to get free. It dives back down like a torpedo and darts underneath the boat. I start to feel the line ease up as the pike slowly makes it’s way to the surface. I quickly grab my steel framed net, with the rod in my other hand, I swoop underneath the fish and cradle it in the net. A sigh of relief rushes through my body. I reach for my metal pliers to unhook this lengthy beast. I prop the pike against the stainless steel measuring tape making sure the line the tail up perfectly, thirty two inches, a complete monster! I snap a few pictures of this beast and then submerge it underneath the water, allowing him to “catch his breath.” The pike begins to regain its strength, I release my grip and my heart rate sinks as it slowly disappears into the mysterious waters of Coleman Lake to continue its dominance and reign of power over all of the lake.
