Although the outside world perceives prison as a horrible place inmates see it as their home and many of them see prison as a comforting place where they know how things work and know they will always have food to eat and somewhere to sleep. Prisons isolate the prisoners on a daily basis and have a structured routine which may seem fine at the time but when the prisoner is released into the real world they find it hard to make daily decisions because they are so to being told what to do. (Harvard Magazine ) I believe that if prisons gave the inmates a little but more tasks where they are forced to make their own decision it may be easier for them to transition into the real world. “Crime is shaped by poverty, addiction and history of family violence.” (Exploring Criminal Justice) One way to help limit this would to open up shelters that help with these issues and in return it would help limit the number of prisoners that enter the correctional system.

These all may seem like minor things but when worked on I truly believe that I will make a difference in the correctional system. If these ideas were implicated it would take a while for the effects to be noticeable but they would be everlasting. Although the correctional system has come a long way in the last 200 years it still has a long way to go before it gets to where there are not dramatic negative effects from it. The correctional system will never be able to limit all crime but hopefully one day it will be able to bring down the percentage of offenses and offenders.
