Walking into the dealership again for the third time, I was provided with the same service quality and attention as my first visit. It wasn’t until a salesman recognized me from my second visit that he approached me and greeted me. After an extensive conversation over what vehicle I was looking for, the salesman finally provided me with the service I expected.

My perception did not change towards this dealership as they still judged their customers based highly on appearances and not by the sole purpose of serving all customers the same per their job requirements. There is definitely a gap between the upper class and lower-middle class citizens in how they are treated in high end consumer markets. “Faking it till you make it” is the best way to get the attention you need when shopping in a high end retail business. Although my level of comfort did change due to the service I was provided during my second visit, it took a second visit and heavy observation of the salespeople to start feeling comfortable that I will be treated the same as any other high end customer. However, this was only due to my appearance and not my class status. I came to the conclusion that comfort level should not matter as long as you are confident in what you are looking for and see past the stereotypical views of others. You are there for a mission and you should focus on what you came for.

In my next visit to a high end dealership, I will definitely dress to impress and make myself known that I need service if anyone wants a commission from the sale. With a confident attitude and focused ambition, this situation has taught me to have confident in my decisions to acquire anything that I want.

There was a huge gap in social inequality in my observation during my visit to the dealership. Throughout history social status and class has always played a big part in the type and level of service you get in certain business. This is something we need to work on in order to see past social inequality and avoid miscommunication. Social inequality creates unnecessary barriers of communication and hinder our ability to expand our emotional intelligence and competence.
