A) Yes. With Holden’s announcement in December 2013 about ending their manufacturing operations in 2017 and Ford’s announcement in May 2013, exiting in October 2016, Toyota was in a strong position as the only automotive manufacturer in the Australian market. We would have prevented the exit of Toyota from the country, and taken this as an opportunity to refocus and re-strategize to strengthen in position in the market.
i. Since Australia is one of only 13 countries with a capacity to design and manufacture motor vehicles, Toyota should enhance its R&D operations to use the best skilled personnel and technologies to gain an advantage as the R&D leader in the region.
ii. With the exit of Holden and Ford, Toyota should take that as an opportunity and revamp its HR and hiring policies. It should start by hiring the best minds and skilled labour in the Australian Automotive Industry.
iii. Toyota should invest in new technologies to make its production model more lean and efficient in order to reduce the cost of production.
iv. Toyota should refocus its strategies on manufacturing those segments of cars, which have a high demand in the market, ie. small and medium segment. This will help them improve their sales and optimize their cost of production.
v. It should also consider importing automotive parts whose cost of manufacturing is high in the domestic market in order to lower their cost of production.
vi. By focusing on the manufacturing of select segment of cars, it can improve its economies to scale to cater to the export market as well. It should focus on making its exports more competitive as well.
vii. It should take advantage of Australian government’s expanded $1.3 billion Green Car Innovation Fund that provides co-investment grants for the production of environmentally friendly cars in order to start manufacturing of such new age cars.
