I think what is helpful when I had to negotiate with more than one person at a time was the spreadsheet. It helped me compare both offers easier and would keep track of how my proposal went.
The problem in this negotiation was the interpretation of the story. I think this significantly affect my decision. Firstly, Al said that her location was in San Francisco, while Bo was in Palo Alto. Secondly, the job position was different. Altitude offered me the senior counsel, while Boniface offered me the mid-level association. The salary, however, didn’t vary to the hierarchy of the job position. Altitude who offered me a higher position, instead, gave me a lower wage than Boniface.
The thing that I shouldn’t do in this negotiation was I shouldn’t ignore Al’s email. This was the worst move ever, and I regretted it. If we had started the conversation since Thursday, instead of starting the same time with Bo, the result would undoubtedly end differently (like Laura and Daniel). Also, this gave Alexia a hard time as well because she decided to gradually build up the relationship and move up the salary slowly, but the negotiation was going oppositely. There were couple reasons that I didn’t want to reply her right away. Firstly, I wanted to wait for Bo to start the negotiation at the same time so that I could compare. Secondly, I was afraid that if I started the conversation with Al first, the pace of the negotiation with her would be too fast. I would have a bias and might end up making a deal with her before I could have a chance to get enough information from Bo.
